Eddie Davis on the 9th hole during the Shoot-Out
Who said high handicappers can't win one of the clubs big events? On a beautiful Memorial Day morning, Eddie Davis proved that on any given "Monday", anyone has a chance.
Fantastic weather and superb golf course conditions welcomed 10 members from last Saturday's qualifying round for the 2015 Memorial Day Shoot-Out. With a net qualifying score of 73, Eddie and his 18 handicap finished third among 35 other competitors to secure his place in Monday's Shoot-Out.
Eddie's solid play allowed him to fly under the radar surviving hole after hole as other lower handicaped players got eliminated one by one. On the 8th hole, Eddie stood along side 3rd place finisher Tom Muneyyirci and perenial club champion Steve Greco. Tom's tee shot landed in a precarious position in the right greenside bunker and was unable to get up and down. This allowed Eddie and Steve to make "routine" pars advancing them to the 9th and final hole.
The 9th hole provided all the drama as one would expect from this event. Steve stepped up to the tee, 1 under par for the day, and as expected hit his tee shot down the right side of the fairway. Eddie's tee shot was pulled left forcing him to decide on whether or not he should go for the green or lay up. Getting a shot on the hole, Eddie played smart and layed up short of the green on his second shot. Leaving about 50 yards for his third, his shot finished just off the back of the green about 15 feet from the pin.
After hitting his second shot over the green, Steve left himself with a very difficult pitch which ended up just short of the green. Facing a difficult downhill chip, Steve almost holed out for par by hitting the flagstick on his chip and leaving his ball about an inch from going in. Needing to get up and down from the fringe for the win, Eddie calmly chipped the ball to two feet and in front of the many members who followed the match, tapped in the putt for the victory.
Thank you to everyone who participated in this wonderful event and Congratulations to Eddie for his victory!
