2015 President's Cup In Review

Greco’s Reign Supreme In 2015 President’s Cup

On an absolutely beautiful weekend for golf, the Hamlet saw the conclusion of our 2015 President’s Cup Tournament.  The President’s Cup, a member / member match play event that spans over the course of two weekends, concluded on Sunday with the finals in 5 flights in the men’s and ladies divisions.

In the Men’s Championship flight, the team of Steve Greco and Howie Stein paired up against the team of Dr. Neil Levin and Marty Turman.  Proving a very formidable side throughout the preliminary rounds, the team of Levin and Turman were neck and neck with their opponents after the front 9.  But Steve and Howie proved to be a bit too strong and reeled off a string of wins starting the back 9 and eventually closed out the match and the championship after the 15th hole with a 4 & 3 victory.  The win was Steve’s 3rd in the Championship flight, 4th overall and Howie’s 2nd in President’s Cup competition.

Not to be outdone by her husband, Liz Greco and her partner Zindy Drew were locked in an epic final against the team of Debbie Biederman and Christine Yi.  In a wonderful match between these evenly matched teams, Liz and Zindy pulled even with a win on the 17th hole after trailing for the entire match.  After halving the 18th hole, extra holes were needed to determine the champion.  On the first playoff hole, Zindy “calmly” rolled in a putt for a par to win the hole and clinch the championship and the first ever win for both ladies in the top flight in the President’s Cup.

For the first time ever, both Liz and Steve were able to share in the glory of a major club championship on the same day.  Congratulations to Steve, Liz and their partners Howie and Zindy for their fantastic play and for being President’s Cup champions.

In the Men’s A flight, the team of Barry Nash and Ray Cornell proved to be a bit too strong for their competitors Peter Kuchlik and Joe Saccente.  With wins on 3 of the last 4 holes that they played, Barry and Ray closed out the match with a 5 & 4 victory.  The win was the 2nd championship for Barry and the first for Ray.

The Men’s B flight saw a terrific final’s match between the team of Dennis Mahoney and Robert Nathanson verses the pairing of Ed Baiter and Robert Kelly.  After trailing 4 down with 4 holes to play, the team of Mahoney and Nathanson hung tough and won the 15th and 16th holes to pull to a 2 down deficit going to the 17th.  But in the end, the steady play of Ed and Robert proved to be a bit too much as they held on for a 2&1 victory.  The first for each of them in President’s Cup competition.

The Men’s C flight championship saw another great match with neither team gaining more than a 1 up advantage through the first 12 holes.  But in the end, it was the team of Leo Bauman and Robert Mittleman whose wins on the 13th and 15th holes were enough to close out the match 3&2 over the team of Dr. Richard Morgan and Neil Singer.  The victory was the first ever for both Robert and Leo in the President’s Cup.

A special thanks goes out to our Superintendent Kevin Ringelberg, assistant Kyle Rodgers and their staff for a wonderful job getting the golf course in fantastic condition.  Thank you to all of our members who participated in this year’s event and for your support of the President’s Cup.
