On the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, The Hamlet held it's qualifying for one of the most anticipated golf events on our golf calendar, the Memorial Day Shoot-Out. A field of 67 members, the largest qualifying field ever, tried their hand at qualifying during the 18 hole net stroke play event.
In the end, 15 members qualified for the Shoot-Out with a net score of 74 or better. However they would have to wait until the following Saturday June 4th due to tropical storm Bonnie that rolled through and cancelled play on Memorial Day.
One of those qualifiers was one of our newest members to the club, Tim Roche. Tim's play on Saturday allowed him to sneak into the Shoot-Out along with 6 other players with a net score of 73. Tim played well during the Shoot-Out with net birdies on Holes 1 & 5 and steady play throughout the day.
On the 8th hole, Tim stepped up to the pressure and calmly sunk a challenging 10 foot downhill putt for par to halve the hole against 3rd place finisher George Pantaleo and eventual runner-up Tom Muneyyirci. The ensuing playoff had the 3 participants hit from the front right greenside bunker in a closest to the pin challenge. Terrific bunker shots from Tim and Tom allowed them both to advance to the 9th and final hole.
With steady hands, Tim stepped up first to the 9th tee and hit a great drive down the right center of the fairway. Although there was a bit of a scare on his approach to the green, his second shot just carried the water leaving the ball short of the putting surface. With Tom in trouble off the tee and left with a difficult pitch shot around the green, a good chip and solid two putt was all Tim needed to win the hole and capture the title.
Congratulations to Tim for his wonderful play during the event and for securing his first title as a member of The Hamlet. A special thanks to the many members who participated and who came out to watch from the sidelines to cheer on our qualifiers.
