Members of the Blue team hoisting the trophy
On a beautiful Saturday afternoon at The Hamlet, the elusive Ryder Cup finally had a winner. After 3 years and 186 matches, the Ryder Cup trophy was finally lifted in celebration.
Since the Red team's victory in 2013, the Ryder Cup event has ended in a stalemate for the last 2 seasons. Entering this year's event, 90 matches had been played with no result. With the largest field of participants in the event's history, 82 members playing in 96 total matches, we seemed certain to get a result one way or the other...right?
After play last Saturday, the Red team held a narrow 33 - 27 point advantage after the first 27 holes of team match play. Rain and in climate weather on Sunday prevented play and forced the final day of singles matches to be rescheduled to the following Saturday. After re working the pairings for the singles, points in 36 matches were still up for grabs during the 18 hole individual matches.
The results of the matches were so close throughout the day, neither team ever amassed more than a 1 point lead over the other as matches were completed. With the final 3 matches completing play on the 9th hole, the overall result was still in doubt. But with just enough points, the Blue team claimed the trophy for the first time in 4 years with a 1 point overall victory.
The Blue team dominated the Red team with a convincing showing in singles play, winning the day 21 1/2 - 14 1/2. The 7 point victory on Saturday was just enough for the slimmest possible margin of victory 48 1/2 - 47 1/2.
Congratulations to captain Jon Kudysch and Vice-captain Howie Stein who along with 7 other players, lead the Blue team to victory winning 3 points in his matches during the tournament.
Thank you to everyone who participated in this awesome event and we will look forward to another great event next October!
See you at the club,
Vic
